500 new homes for families in Palo


More than 105,000 families in southern Luzon including Metro Manila have been hit by Typhoon Glenda (International Name: Rammasun) in July 2014. It has claimed more than 100 death and is considered the third costliest tropical cyclone in Philippine history with $7.13 billion.
Habitat is currently in the field assessing the number of displaced families and has dispatched its HAMER or Habitat Mobile Emergency Response vehicle to help in the construction of urgent relief facilities and repairs of damage houses. Initial reports indicate that hundreds of families won’t be able to return to their houses because of severe damage. Habitat has initially allocated Php 1 million to help Typhoon Glenda-affected families, mainly to distribute Shelter Repair Kits (SRKs) which are composed a set of construction tools and materials for emergency house repairs.

Project Summary

Habitat’s response to the damages is the development of 500 permanent duplex houses intended to provide a permanent and  decent houses for 500 families or about 3,200 individuals whose houses was destroyed by the typhoon. The floor area of the apartments comprise 60 sq m and 29 sq m. All apartments will have restroom composed of bath & toilet. Construction have started in September 2014 and will (potentially) end in February 2015.

Impact of the Project

The project will provide new and save homes for more than 3,000 people in Leyte.
